I guess that's a major reason it's always been one of the most fascinating films I have ever seen. The brutal command of drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (played by former drill sergeant R. The same happens to Joker at the end of the film, where yet another violent scene shocks his own conscience. By the end of boot camp, we are forced to confront this ugly reality through a shocking act of violence (two in fact if you include the beating of Leonard). Laughing at what Hartman was saying detached us, the audience, from what was going on right in front of us, namely, turning those boys into trained killers, which was breaking down Leonard's fragile psyche. It is an olive green, metallic campaign hat with a metal cog on the front instead of the Team Fortress logo, a pressure gauge on the side, and an aerial on the brim of the hat. It is a robotic version of the Sergeants Drill Hat.

Joker could survive because his sense of humor allowed him to be detached in some way from what was going on around him. The Full Metal Drill Hat is a community-created cosmetic item for the Soldier. I suspect that's part of the message of the film, in a small way. Having been through boot camp (not Marine but Navy) I can say that those guys really are funny AF, even if you usually don't want to laugh where they can hear you. No, you're supposed to find him humorous. Lee Ermey, a former US Marine and Parris Island drill instructor, was first hired by Kubrick as a military technical advisor.
